One way in which we can clear our thoughts and start fresh is by actually working to clear out the clutter we all tend to accumulate far too much of. By deciding to let go of a lot of the physical “stuff” that weighs us down, we can begin to appreciate the importance of what we have left. Since we are surrounded by less, we have less to worry about. This is the concept of minimalism. Many have chosen to embrace this lifestyle as a means of centering their lives around experiences and connections with others rather than connections with inanimate objects.
We live in a consumerist society, one that is centered on earning financially and achieving happiness via the accumulation of things. Ingrained in us is a mentality that the more we have the more we have. We define our status and success by how many homes, vehicles, toys, clothes, and pieces of jewelry we have. We live to make others envious of these things.
But, truth be told, we are miserable, because the more we have, the less we have.
In striving to make others jealous, we begin to alienate ourselves rather than build meaningful relationships. We can only feel pure contentment in creating connections. Humans are meant to be social and interconnected. We’re not meant to live in individual bubbles surrounded by our possessions.
Living this way will only ensure we feel unfulfilled and miserable forever. We’ll continue to seek out the next best thing because the joy we feel towards things doesn’t last. It’s not reciprocated. Our things can’t love us back.
Those who practice minimalism have released their possessions and in doing so have released their minds of an obsession. How can we rid ourselves of this unhealthy bond to our possessions? We can work to slowly let go of each item, piece by piece. And, once we’ve decluttered our surroundings, we’ll inevitably feel a sense of profound relief. We will suddenly have a lot less to worry about…a lot less weighing us down.
When you give up things that don’t matter from your space, you’ll have more room for those things that do. Appreciation for life’s blessings, acceptance, inner beauty, and self-love. Respect from others rather than disdain. Your mind will be free and clear of clutter. Your thoughts will be more centered, and you’ll be able to fully take hold of what mindful thinking and living has to offer.
When you get to this point in your healing journey pause for a moment of self-reflection. You deserve it. It’s a momentous milestone.
